Why does is Colonel based on the Italian spelling, colonnella, but pronounced based on the 1400-1600's French coronell?
I'd imagine it's insanely confusing to people who have never encountered it before (particularly ESL). How do you get an 'r' sound out of 'l's? >_>
I think if I hadn't seen it before, I'd spell it, 'kernel', and if I hadn't heard it before, I'd say it, "Call-on-el'.

I though these were life questions? not lets make me feel better?? anyway
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
I bet one legend that keeps recurring throughout history, in every culture, is the story of Popeye.
